Believing in Community

Local Charity Celebrates 75 years of working with the communities of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe

Since 1938, Bede House has been working from their base in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe to support local people in creating better lives for themselves their families and their communities. Bede believe in building relationships over the long-term, bringing people together of different backgrounds, skills and experiences to create new opportunities for those who have fewest. Bede make this happen through providing services for adults who have a learning disability, young people from families on low incomes and survivors of relationship abuse and hate crime, plus working to help local volunteers to improve life for others.

This August a Heritage Lottery funded exhibition will celebrate Bedes 75 years of working with the people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. The exhibition of photographs tells the story of our local communities and Bede’s work from 1938 to the present day. It will be held in the Café Gallery in Southwark Park opening Saturday 10th August until Sunday 18th August.

Reminiscence Weekend

On the first weekend (10th and 11th August), local people are invited to come along and tell their stories of life in the area and bring any old photographs they have. They will be able to contribute to the exhibition by having their stories recorded and their photographs copied and added to the display. This project will bring together communities and promote greater understanding, knowledge and pride in the shared heritage of those whose residency goes back generations as well as those more recently arrived.

Terry Hardy of Bede House said, “This exhibition gives us a great opportunity in our 75th anniversary year to celebrate with the communities we have worked alongside through the tremendous challenges of this period of history and to further share and add to our knowledge of our joint heritage”.
