The symposium will focus on the thematic of ‘generative environments’, in relation to the works in this year’s LCC MA SOUND ART exhibition. With talks from Tom Davis and Maria Papadomanolaki, as well as contributions from the artists and the Course Leader Thomas Gardner, chaired by Salomé Voegelin. The symposium will also be an opportunity to engage directly with the artists’ research, with the display of their research posters and through direct conversation, a unique facet of the course. It will end with a performance by Chase Coley.

Dr Tom Davis is an instrument builder, improviser and sound artist. His artistic output involves the creation of technologically-led environments for interaction. He has performed and exhibited across Europe and in the US. Davis is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bournemouth and holds a PhD from SARC, Belfast.

Maria Papadomanolaki is a Greek sound practitioner and researcher currently based in London. Her work and research focus on creating collaborative listening experiences, often in sites associated with transience. Either in the form of telemetatic soundwalks, outdoors listening events, durational broadcasts or workshops, Papadomanolaki is interested in investigating sound in response to place-making, perception and memory. Papadomanolaki has presented her work and research at galleries, conferences and festivals in Europe, UK and the US. She is a founding member of SoundCamp collective and has co-edited the publications Transmission Arts: Artists & Airwaves (PAJ Publications, 2011) and sounds remote (SoundCamp/Uniformbooks, 2016).
